Validating women’s experiences
For centuries, women’s bodies have been overlooked, abused and ignored. Most modern medical science and medicine has been tested on men only, due to the variable nature of women’s bodies. The clitoris was only fully mapped in 1998, under 20 years ago.
I know that thousands of women go to their doctor with symptoms and are gaslit about their own experiences, told to relax more and sent home with the contraceptive pill. The pill does not address the root cause, but shuts down your cycle and ovulation, impacting every other hormonal system in the process.
At Aima we know that the body works together. Hormones don’t just run the reproductive system, hormones are responsible for your sleep-wake cycle, for balancing blood sugar, for levels of hydration, for energy, concentration, hunger, satiation and muscle synthesis.
It is vital we look at the interconnectedness of our endocrine systems to resolve symptoms, improve health and prevent auto-immune and cancer diseases that are ever more prevelant.
What does Aima mean?
Aima is a name inspired by its meanings across cultures and languages. Take the Greek for blood – aíma – αίμα, – the sacred life force of the womb from which life is created. Blood, so often associated with harm or aversion, is something women are intimately connected to from puberty and contains vital health signals.
In Sanskrit Aiṃ – ऐं has meanings of the divine wisdom of nature as well as being a mantra for expression and communication, historically denied to women. In Arabic, aima carries meanings of noble, blessed, leader, and source of life. In Nigerian cultures, it is associated with life itself. In Spanish, alma – a paronym – means soul.
The Hebrew, Ima (אמא) means mother. Whether or not a woman bears children, she belongs to the collective feminine from which life emerges. Every human is born of a woman, though women have long been repressed by the very societies they sustain.
